Newcomers to figure collecting often stumble on the same small mystery: what do those fractions actually mean? Understanding scale is the key to knowing how large a figure will be, how much space it demands, and how it will sit alongside the rest of your collection.

How scale works

A scale figure is a proportional miniature of a character at their imagined real-world height. The fraction expresses that ratio: a 1/8 figure is one-eighth the size of the character in reality, a 1/4 figure one-quarter. The smaller the denominator, the larger — and usually more detailed and more expensive — the statue.

The common scales, in plain terms

A 1/8 figure typically stands around 20 to 23 centimetres and is the everyday workhorse of the hobby: detailed, affordable, and shelf-friendly. A 1/7 sits slightly larger and grander. A 1/4 is a statement piece — often 40 centimetres or more — with sculpting and presence to match, and a footprint that demands real planning.

Choosing the right scale for you

Larger is not automatically better. A consistent scale across a shelf creates harmony and lets characters relate to one another believably, while mixing scales freely can feel chaotic unless it is done deliberately. Consider your available space, your budget, and whether you value a cabinet of many companions or a few commanding centrepieces.
